Sooner or later we all experience a friction, wear, or lubrication problem. Solutions to tribology problems can be as simple as replacing a worn-out appliance or greasing a hinge on a door, but they could be as complex as predicting the wear rate of fuel rod cladding inside a pressurized-water nuclear reactor. Friction and wear issues take on many forms. Friction in vehicle brakes can be a matter of life or death. Friction in telescope bearings can affect incredibly precise aiming. Wear-resistant materials permit the reliable performance of jet engine bearings, hip and knee implants, and next-generation, energy-efficient engines that run on either alternative fuels or electricity. Such advances are enabled by a combination of surface engineering and lubricant selection. Tribology is an enabling science!
Despite the importance of tribology in daily life, specialized training in the area is surprisingly rare in colleges and universities. Therefore, a need exists for consultants with knowledge and experience.
